AND ABSTRACT THOUGHT

"Genesis, to Day Two"

Prayer Circles: Sacred Text and Abstract Thought, was the three year solo exhibition series created by chlee. Begun in 2003, the series successfully built bridges between divergent communities, challenging audiences to participate in both the examination of Fine Art and the celebration of prayer.

Hosted exclusively in houses of worship, three shows were presented each of the three years. The works in the series are primarily drawings and paintings on handmade papers and animal hides. Prayer and meditation served as the catalyst for each piece. Sacred texts from many religious traditions (as well as the entire Book of Psalms) were used for the various pieces. Overall, more than 250 pieces ranging in size from 8" square to over 8 feet were created.

In collaboration with the Host, chlee ensured that the installation fit within the physical space and respectful of doctrine and belief systems. The artist also became a "voice" for the series, taking part in either sermon and/or a gallery talk with the congregations and visitors.

The majority of the Psalms have been sold, however, the artist will take commissions for your favorite Psalm (price dependent upon length of text). Also, prints of both the Lord's Prayer and the 23rd Psalm are available handsomely matted ($85. + s/h).

On existing large-scale Prayer Circles, serious consideration on discounting is available for pieces being purchased for church homes. Please contact the artist for particulars.
